FAQS

Pregnancy Massage FAQs

When sufficiently supported by pillows, and/or cushions, most women can relax in this position. Side-lying also minimizes strain on any of the uterine ligaments or on the musculoskeletal structures. It prevents additional intrauterine pressure, increased sinus pressure, and tends to offer psychological comfort for most pregnant women. The side-lying position is recommended to help ensure placental and foetal circulation when complications occur and in many high-risk pregnancies. The left side-lying position allows maximum maternal cardiac functioning and foetal oxygenation, though most pregnancies are perfectly safe with mom on either their left or right side.

  • We use firm and soft pillows for support. The head needs to be supported so that the cervical spine is aligned with the torso. Sufficient support to accommodate the space between the shoulder and the head so that the shoulder is not uncomfortably compressed beneath her upper torso weight.
  • A small pillow is tucked under the abdomen near the pubic bone to support the uterus and prevent uterine ligament and lumbar strain. Another small pillow is placed under the waist to support the lumbar spine and a pillow to support the upper arm, relieving pressure on tender breasts and preventing anterior torso rotation.
  • The bottom leg is extended and positioned on the table behind the other leg to avoid restriction of blood flow. The top leg is supported by a pillow of sufficient height to maintain a horizontal line between hip, knee and ankle, and to moderately flex this hip and knee. This will prevent strain on the sacroiliac joints and the lumbar spine, and anterior rolling of the torso. Proper leg height also mechanically assists in the reduction of leg swelling and provides relief from painful varicose veins.
